Coimbatore: Simplifying their wedding and making it a Covid-19 awareness campaign, a couple from the Kurudamplayam Panchayat of Thudiyalur tied the knot today in a modest ceremony at a Vinayagar temple in Aruna Nagar involving just 25 relatives and friends.

Due to the COVID-19 lockdown people have been asked to stay indoors for the past one month and are allowed to step outside only to buy essentials. Only doctors, sanitation workers, police and other people involved in essential services are being permitted to step out and continue with their work. Weddings and deaths can only involve only very few people. Many weddings that were planned on a grand scale had to be undertaken in a simpler version.
Following the bandwagon, the couple Vignesh Babu, a Civil Engineer and Praveena, an IT employee who were engaged on March 13, in Thudiyalur, gave up their gala wedding.
Earlier, wedding invitations were printed and distributed to their friends and relatives. More than 2,500 guests were expected for the wedding and preparations were made accordingly.
However, due to the extension of the lockdown they discussed with their parents and changed the plan. The wedding was conducted in a simple manner, however the ceremony was broadcasted on Facebook Live. It was also shared on Youtube for their friends and relatives to view.
Following the wedding, the couple distributed the wedding breakfast to the police involved in security duty near Vadamadurai, in their wedding attire. Food was also distributed to destitute people. Food distribution was done with the help of former Kurudampalayam President and Corporation officials.
Speaking about the wedding Vignesh Babu said, "We had invited nearly 2,500 people. However, due to the COVID-19 situation and the government order to invite only a few people to the wedding, the marriage was conducted in a simple manner”.
He added that since many of their relatives and friends would miss witnessing the wedding, they broadcasted it live on Facebook and uploaded it on Youtube.
Vignesh Babu further informed that the distribution of food to the police and the needy, had brought them enough blessings.
“We are glad to have done this,” he said.
