Coimbatore: D. Andrew Sam Raja Pandian, founder of news portal SimpliCity, was arrested late on Thursday, following a complaint filed by M. Sundararajan, Assistant Commissioner, Personal Administration CMC, Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: D. Andrew Sam Raja Pandian, founder of news portal SimpliCity, was arrested late on Thursday, following a complaint filed by M. Sundararajan, Assistant Commissioner, Personal Administration CMC, Coimbatore.
The complaint referred to two news reports, one on alleged shortcomings faced by government healthcare professionals, and another on alleged corruption by some employees of the Public Distribution System (PDS) outlets (links attached), found on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The R.S. Puram police registered a case based on the complaint and arrested the founder under Sections 188, 505(1)(b) of the IPC and Section 3 of The Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the complainant had alleged that the news reports published were ‘false’ and ‘provocative’ against the State Government.
Just before Andrew Sam was arrested, a reporter and photographer of SimpliCity, who were retained for more than 10 hours, were let off.
The founder was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody. He has been lodged in the Avinashi Sub-jail.
