Coimbatore: BJP TN State General Secretary, Vanathi Srinivasan on Thursday in a tweet highlighted the recent plea by The Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association, (SIEMA) to Home Minister, Amit Shah.

Coimbatore: BJP TN State General Secretary, Vanathi Srinivasan on Thursday in a tweet highlighted the recent plea by The Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association, (SIEMA) to Home Minister, Amit Shah.

Seconding the recent letter by SIEMA requesting to add pumpsets to the list of essentials items and to permit its supply chain movement, Vanathi Srinivasan through a tweet requested the Home Minister to consider their plea.

Earlier, SIEMA had requested to permit the operation of the supply chain of pumpsets and its accessories considering them as priority - essential machinery for Water Supply and Farming operations.

The letter by SIEMA stated, "The Indian Pump Industry with a market size of Rs.15,000 crores is concentrated in the

states of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. More than 80% of the pumps made are supplied to the farming and water supply sector, the two high priority sectors."

SIEMA, established in 1952, represents the interests of the pump manufacturers of our Country. SIEMA with more than 300 pump manufacturers members fully supports this lock down measure taken by the Government of India, to save the Humanity, they assured.

They went on to request the Minister to consider the supply chain of pumpsets as priority and essential item and permit its operation, citing the following reasons.

1) Pumps are used for water supply in local bodies across the country. Local Bodies in many districts across the country are solely dependent on pumps for water supply. Water supply operations are getting affected due to failure of pumps and the inability to replace or repair the pumps due to lock down.

2) Pump is the main agricultural machinery and the majority of the farmers are dependent on pumps for irrigation. Even a small disruption in irrigating the crop will lead to total crop loss, not only putting the individual farmer at loss but also threatening the food security of the country.

SIEMA further requested to permit functioning of the entire supply chain of pumpsets from manufacturing to distribution and service network at a reduced scale to ease the requirement and issue an addendum to referred GO by including Agricultural machinery such as pumpsets.
