Coimbatore: A nationwide protest demanding government relief for migrant labourers was put forth by the CPI (ML) and they conducted a fasting strike yesterday.
Coimbatore: A nationwide protest demanding government relief for migrant labourers was put forth by the CPI (ML) and they conducted a fasting strike yesterday.
As a part of the protest the CPI (ML) cadres staged a fasting protest in support of the migrant labourers near MuthannanKulam on Thandagam road in a densely populated residential area. They held banners and conducted the protest.
CPI (ML) Velmurugan and AICCTU State Secretary Louis took part in the protest. During the protest they said, "Migrant labourers are greatly affected by this lockdown. They have no job and no money to buy food and are dealing with a lot of hardships. The Central government must provide a relief fund of Rs.10,000 to the migrant workers. They must also ensure their social protection and help them get back to their hometowns."
Subsequently, the R.S. Puram police arrested Velmurugan and Louis for gathering people in a protest during the lockdown. They were arrested and booked under cases for causing unrest among the general public, spreading rumours about the government, violating the lockdown, failing to obey the orders of a government servant and under the prevention of contagious diseases act.
While the AICCTU State Secretary Louis was released on bail by the police, the CPI (ML) District Secretary Velmurugan was produced before the First Judicial Magistrate Court Judge Prabhu's house and later imprisoned.
