Sampath Kumar (20), S/o Selvam and Kavitha of Madurai joined the army upon completing the Military examinations in December 2019. Following this, he was undergoing training at the Wellington MRC AVA Hill Army training center near Coonoor.
The spread of Covid-19 led to the closure of the Army Camp. The camp was closed and sealed and the young soldiers in the camp were banned from stepping outside. Sampath Kumar was allegedly under a lot of mental stress because of this ban to not step outside.
On Saturday, in spite of the ban and the security, Sampath Kumar managed to escape the army training camp. An extensive search for the missing person did not yield any result.
Finally, the body of Sampath Kumar was found hanging near Black Bridge on the Coonoor-Ooty Highway. He was found to have committed suicide.
The Military personnel informed the Wellington Police. They rushed to the spot and retrieved the body of Sampath Kumar and sent it to the Coonoor GH for autopsy.
The police have registered a case and are investigating.
