The Nilgiris: The Pasteur Institute at Coonoor in Nilgiris established in 1907, functions under the Central Government's Health Department. The Pasteur Institute has been engaged in the production of vaccinations for dog bites and now it has become a popular center for testing for rabies. It also provides treatment for rabies. The iconic institute is also now equipped with world class infrastructure, which will facilitate the institute to be eligible for the production of the Triple Antigen vaccines.

About a week back, the institute had raised the request to conduct COVID-19 testing in it’s labs as it has all the facilities. They said at that time, that having the testing in Nilgiris would really help identify and test more people quickly. Now the institute has been granted the permissions to conduct testing.
The District Collector Innocent Divya today undertook an inspection of the institute and consulted with the authorities. Speaking to the reporters she said, "The Central Government has granted permission to the Pasteur Institute to conduct COVID-19 testing. The ICMR has provided the certificate and so COVID-19 testing will commence at this institute in a couple of days.
