Coimbatore: Due to the COVID -19 lockdown people have been asked to step out only to buy essentials. The police have been asked to take severe action against those who violate the orders. Because of the overcrowding in meat shops and the fact that there were a lot of people who were infected in the Podanur, Ukkadam, Kuniyamuthur areas, shops were asked to remain closed from last week.

Flouting regulations, there were complaints that in many areas, meat shops ran behind closed doors and also had online ordering facility in zomato.

SimpliCity had today published a photostory of a meat shop in Masakkalipalayam Road, Near Hope College running behind closed doors and delivering through zomato.

Following this, the authorities had visited the meat shop and confiscated the meat that was kept for selling and sealed the shop today evening.

The meat shop closure saga

Earlier this week, the Nilgiris District Collector Innocent Divya reversed her earlier order to not sell meat the week before and had permitted the poultry shops to remain open from Monday to Friday. She also said that depending on how social distancing was maintained permission might be considered for the shops to remain open on all seven days.

When this was raised as a question to Minister S.P. Velumani and the Coimbatore District Collector, the Minister said, "The decision will be made by the District Collector as there are shops amidst a lot of houses in the residential areas. However, shops cannot function until further orders from the administration."

Online sale of meat has also been banned in Coimbatore by the District Collector and shops that violate this order are being sealed by the District administration.

Other meat shops in Kumarapalayam of Annur circle belonging to Balasubramaniam has been closed and sealed due to the violation of the lockdown rule. On receiving information regarding the functioning of this shop the Revenue department officials and the Town Panchayat Administration sealed the shop shut.
