Coimbatore: A Kerala couple working at a mill in Coimbatore were stranded in Coimbatore and were left in a dire state due to lack of money.
Prakash and Jayalakshmi from Alappuzha are staying and working at a private mill near Gounder Mill for the past six months. They were accommodated in a room given by the mill. Due to the imposition of the lockdown they lost their jobs and have been struggling for an income. The couple have a five month old child.
Prakash and Jayalakshmi decided to go back to their native place and travelled up to Walayar. However the Kerala police denied entry and asked them to stay back wherever they were until the lockdown was released.
Following this, the couple recorded a video detailing their plight and sought help from the authorities to help them reach Alappuzha. This video was circulated widely on social media.
Coming to know about the plight of the couple, the Coimbatore North Revenue Tahsildar Maheshkumar consulted with the Saravanampatti police and requested them to help Prakash receive his salary.
Subsequently, the Saravanampatti police spoke to the owner of the mill and got a payment of Rs.13,000 for Prakash. Further, they also arranged for accommodation and food for Prakash and his family.
This effort by the Tahsildar and the police, to help the needy couple has garnered praise by many in the locality.
