There are more than 50,000 tea estate workers who are employed in the 50 different tea estates at Valparai. These workers travel to Valparai for various purposes, constantly. Grocery stores, vegetable shops and butcher shops are the most crowded places. As a result of this maintaining social distancing becomes questionable.

To control the crowds and to keep a check on the movement of people into Valparai, these check posts have been set up. As a result of this the number of people visiting Valparai has come down considerably. The Municipal Commissioner informed that these check posts would remain as long as the lockdown was in place.
