Coimbatore: Amidst the ongoing COVID-19 threat, the Dean of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital Dr. Asokan has been transferred. Sources confirm that Dr. Kalidasan of Department of Social and Preventive Medicine will take charge as the new Dean, with immediate effect.

It is speculated that the action comes after the two PG student doctors who treated COVID-19 patients at ESI hospital contracted the virus and following complaints by over 500 UG and PG student doctors of not providing food at their CRRI hostel quarters.

A couple of days back, all UG and OG student doctors at the CRRI quarters revolted against the CMCH Dean and the authorities for not providing them food on a timely manner. The enraged doctors boycotted their meal and demanded action against the authorities by tweeting their plight to the State Health Ministry.

Reports also confirm that the two PG student doctors who were tested positive for COVID-19 were denied proper isolation facilities at ESI hospital after their duty at COVID ward. Lack of arrangements and preparedness by the concerned authorities under the purview of the Dean caused huge dissatisfaction among the fellow student doctors.

Following repeated issues raised by the student doctors during such a pandemic situation, has triggered the transfer of the Dean, informed a source from CMCH.

Update - 16/04/2020 - 04:53 PM

It has been confirmed with official orders to transfer Coimbatore Dean Dr. Ashokan with immediate effect and he has been asked to report to Directorate of Medical Education. Dr. Kalidasan as mentioned above will take over the Dean of CMCH with immediate effect. This information is now confirmed with official orders from the State Health Department.
