Coimbatore: The spread of COVID-19 has been increasing day by day in Coimbatore with over 126 people who have been tested positive for the virus who are being administered treatment. The District Collector has ordered yesterday that people should wear face masks while stepping out of their houses. Even the Police, Government officials and other people out and about for essential services are required to wear face masks compulsorily. Action is being initiated against those who defy the order and step out without masks.
While the demand for face masks is now high with the compulsory order, the price of face masks have been hiked in stores.
A triple layered face mask which used to cost Rs. 4 is now being sold for Rs.20. Similarly reusable cloth masks also cost Rs.20. N95 masks are priced between Rs.300 and Rs.600. In spite of the high price surge, there is a huge shortage of N95 masks.
This increase in the price of face masks has made it a pricey commodity to purchase repeatedly for the common man. Public request the district administration to definitely look into standardising the price of the such essentials with the traders and pass an order.
