The Nilgiris: In a petition to the Central and State Governments the Chairman of the United Plantation Association of South India (UPASI) Majjai V. Mohan has requested for a monthly compensation for the workers, micro and small tea farmers. Mentioning that around ten lakh workers who work on the tea estates in Nilgiris, Idukki, Nelliyampathi, Thiruvananthapuram Valparai and Tirunelvi districts have lost their livelihood due to the lockdown while he appealed for a compensation.

He mentioned that “more than 200 tea factories had been closed down in the Southern Districts and the tea harvesting work had also come to a halt.

The Central government had released the lockdown for farmers and for tea production as well. Tea farmers have started work at the estates with adequate protection. However some big tea estates are still hesitant to send workers for harvesting and this has caused problems with the livelihood of some of the workers and farmers.

The livelihood of some of the micro and small tea farmers have been continuously affected. Unharvested tea leaves have been going to a waste causing a huge loss for the tea estates. He therefore requested arrangements to be made by the Central and State governments to provide a compensation of up to Rs.10,000 a month for the workers who are stranded because of this situation.
