Coimbatore: Corporation officials ordered to close down flower shops that opened today going against the lockdown in Poo Market.
Everyday, 10 to 20 tons of flowers are traded on usual days. This sale will be up by an additional 10 tonnes on wedding and special days. Flowers come from Thondamuthur, Karamadai, Sathyamangalam, Pollachi, Nilakkottai, Madurai, Salem, Dharmapuri, Rayakottai, and Hosur. Various varieties of flowers such as arali, marugu, marikolunthu, malli, mullai, jaathi, kanakambaram, seven variety of roses, sendumalli, and sevvanthi are sold here.
These flowers are being sold by sellers of the Coimbatore District Florists Association. There are 144 stalls, 20 rooftop shops and 28 stall shops daily. But due to the lockdown and the fact that Poo Market is one of the containment zones, the municipal authorities have ordered to close down 3 flower shops that violated the curfew.
When contacted, Coimbatore District Flower Association Treasurer Ayyappan said that “it was customary for the public to buy flowers to celebrate Tamil New Year. He said about 3,000 families benefit from the sale of flowers and the shops are closed due to the lockdown.”
He said, "Despite lockdown, some people from other parts of the city are doing business and it is good that everyone is obeying the government's mandate to observe the social distancing. If not this year, next year Tamil New Year can be celebrated but security is important."
