Coimbatore: With fears about COVID-19 taking an emotional toll on people, a farmer from the region allegedly committed suicide fearing of being infected with the virus.

Amidst this worldwide pandemic and the entire nation under lock down, Palanisamy (38) a farmer from Poorandampalayam in Sulur is among the many who are stuck in uncertainty and bracing for what may come. Repeatedly watching the headlines in televisions and death tolls due to the pandemic, a very distressed Palanisamy was mentally upset and convinced that he too was affected with COVID-19.

A few days ago he had started ranting about him having contracted COVID-19. The family members realised that he was under a lot of stress, following which they decided to take him to the hospital.

Palanisamy was taken to the hospital by his wife Sudha and his brother's son. On the way to the hospital Palanisamy parked his two wheeler on the side of the road in the Senjerimalai area.

Later he allegedly jumped into the canal and committed suicide. His body was carried by the current and was later found near the Aavin milk booth in Sultanpet.

Based on the complaint filed by Sudha at the Sultanpet Police Station the body was retrieved and the police are conducting an investigation regarding the death.
