Coimbatore: "Owing to increase in COVID-19 cases in Coimbatore, the District Collector has tightened the norms and passed directives to NGOs and private entities to stop distributing food or relief materials to the needy. Henceforth, the Corporation's centralised kitchen will take care of the food preparation and distribution", District Collector K Rajamani told on Sunday.
Coimbatore: "Owing to increase in COVID-19 cases in Coimbatore, the District Collector has tightened the norms and passed directives to NGOs and private entities to stop distributing food or relief materials to the needy. Henceforth, the Corporation's centralised kitchen will take care of the food preparation and distribution", District Collector K Rajamani told on Sunday.
An official order confirming the same is expected to be issued by the end of the day.
"Though their good deeds are laudable and helpful, the nature of the pandemic cannot permit crowding of people in the name of social service. Social distancing norms is defied at all these relief and food preparation centres where hundreds of volunteers at close distance engage in preparation and packaging of food. In a worse case scenario, even if one of the volunteers gets infected, there are high chances for the entire place to get infected", the Collector told.
The Collector hence has advised all good samaritans, NGOs and private entities who are involved in food preparation and distribution to the needy especially to migrant workers to hand over the raw materials and relief materials to the concerned Tahsildhars.
He also apprised that the list of people and area to whom food and relief were supplied by the NGOs will be collected from them and henceforth the Corporation will supply them the essentials through centralised kitchens and relief centres.
Further, District Collector K Rajamani assured that citizens can be rest assured that the government will take care of the needy who are in need of food and essentials and meanwhilr, the citizens can help the government by strictly staying indoors.
