Man dies drinking hand sanitiser due to lack of liquor in Tirupur

Coimbatore: Due to the lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the sale of anything other than people's essentials has been banned. Due to this, the liquor stores are closed making alcohol addicts frustrated. They buy and drink liquor at high prices in the black market. The police have filed cases against them and confiscated alcohol beverages from violators.

In the meantime, Bernard, who lives in the Sulur Taluk office road, has been living with his family in Tirupur for the past 13 years. He’s been working as a cylinder supplier at Bharat Gas Company on Kongu Main Road for the past 1 month. The company had supplied sanitiser for the delivery persons as a preventive measure against corona. 

Frustrated by the lack of liquor sources to drink, Bernard, who had brought the sanitisers home had been drinking it by mixing water for the past two days. Yesterday he had vomited after he slept drinking the sanitiser. Doctors said Bernard died on the way when his wife Priya took him to the Government Hospital in Coimbatore. 

The case is being registered by the Sulur police on a complaint filed by Priya. Body of Bernard is kept for autopsy at the Government Hospital in Coimbatore. He is survived by three daughters, Angel Santini (14), Jayshalini (12) and Genelia Marie (6).

The death of a young father who succumbed to drinking hand sanitiser due to lack of alcohol has worried many women in the area.
