Coimbatore: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the Coimbatore district administration to give more importance to drinking water supply as water usage has increased by people stuck in their homes during lockdown.
In a statement issued by the Coimbatore District Secretary of the Marxist party, V. Ramamurthy, he said "the district administration has been working on corona prevention and relief for poor workers during the curfew and insists that this should be intensified."
During this curfew, all the family members are at home, the need for water has increased due to constant hand washing and high heat. Since the factory and business establishments are closed, the water should be diverted to residential areas where there is no water requirement for these companies.
In the letter they said, "Right now you can see people going to places where drinking water comes in with pots and cans for drinking water. As a result of this, we urge the Coimbatore Corporation and the District Administration to ensure that the drinking water supply is provided at least once in three days.
"Action must be taken to ensure that all subsidiary and food items are received by the needy. The vast majority of other state workers working in private enterprises and the unregistered industries are in a state of despair. We urge that the district administration should intervene that no worker should be affected during this curfew.", the release said.
"Ordinary people take to the streets with no other option but to buy basic essentials, including food and medicine and are reprimanded by the police and sent away to avoid overcrowding. We appreciate the sanitary workers for their good job. We urge the district administration to provide them with food and protective gear."
