Coimbatore: Following the disinfection tunnel that was modelled in Tirupur, Coimbatore’s district administration today launched four disinfection tunnels.

The disinfection tunnels are to be set up in 12 more locations thus giving Coimbatore 16 such disinfection tunnels in different locations where people throng public places in Coimbatore. Six of the twelve tunnels have been sponsored by private entities so far which includes the four opened today.

Sumangali Jewellers of Raja Street Coimbatore has sponsored 5 tunnels that will come up in ESI Main Building, Ukkadam Market, Gandhipuram Bus Stand, Vadavalli Market and Sundarapuram Market in Coimbatore. Each tunnel has been setup at a cost of Rs. 1.20 lakh per tunnel.

Conceptualized originally in the region by Tirupur based entrepreneur D Venkatesh and installed first in the Tirupur Market with the help of Tirupur Collector K Vijayakarthikeyan, this portable tunnel is 16-feet long made of stainless steel, fitted in a mild steel frame. As people walk through the disinfection tunnel for about 3-5 seconds the disinfectant is sprayed on the people.

The disinfectant is a fine mist of Sodium-Hypochlorite in a water-base at 0.5 ppm. Nozzles have been fitted throughout the length of the tunnel to spray the disinfectant solution. One needs to wash his / her hands before entering the tunnel.

Earlier today the disinfection tunnels were inaugurated by Minister S.P. Velumani, District Collector K. Rajamani and Corporation Commissioner J. Sravan Kumar in various places. More tunnels will be installed in the next few days.
