Coimbatore: Shops that have been approved by the TN government, to remain open, during the lockdown include grocery stores, milk stores, vegetable shops and medical shops. At Valparai though, all the shops in the market area are fully functional and remain open for business irrespective of the fact that they are not essential services and not needed to be opened at this time.

Due to the large number of people who visit the market, the norms of social distancing are not easy to follow, putting all of the public at risk. The police have been warning the people about this over loudspeakers. However people seem to turn a deaf ear to any kind of warning or announcement.
Hence the Valparai Municipal Commissioner Dr. Pavanraj has warned, "Severe action will be taken by the police, against shop owners who defy the rules of the Municipality" Social activists and the public welcomed this message by the Municipal Commissioner and expect strict action the people who are defying the rules of the lockdown.
