Coimbatore: Following the call of the PM to switch off the lights between 9 PM to 9.09 PM, on April 5, some doubts had been expressed, regarding the stability of the grid, post the event. Even the TNEB had asked people to not turn off all the electrical appliances and just turn off the lights.

Following this, the Ministry of Power has issued clarifications, through a series of tweets.
The tweets read, "Some apprehensions have been expressed that this may cause instability in the grid and fluctuation in voltage which may harm the electrical appliances. These apprehensions are misplaced. The Indian electricity grid is robust, stable and adequate arrangements and protocols are in place to handle the variation in demand."
It further said, "Appeal of the Hon’ble PM is to simply switch off the lights in homes from 9 pm to 9.09 pm on the 5th of April. There is no call to switch off either street lights or appliances like Computers, TVs, Fans, Refrigerators and ACs in the homes."
Regarding the concerns expressed about turning off lights in public places and hospitals, it clarified, saying, "The lights in Hospitals and all other essential services like public utilities, Municipal services, offices, Police stations, manufacturing facilities, etc will remain on. The call given by Hon’ble PM is to just switch off lights in residences."
It further said, "All local bodies have been advised to keep the street lights on for public safety."
One user suggested that this information must be broadcast on TV, so that people do not make any mistakes, like the previous time during the Janta curfew.
