Coimbatore: Due to the lack of social distancing at the Annur weekly market today, the Tahsildar ordered for the weekly market to stop functioning and disperse. Following this order, the market activities were called off and the weekly market was closed down.

The weekly market at Annur takes place every week at the ground belonging to the Town Panchayat, behind the Annur bus stand. Every Saturday more than 100 stalls selling groceries and vegetables are put up here. Since there are no other markets in Annur, residents who live within the 20 kms radius are dependent on this market, for their weekly purchase of groceries and vegetables.
Due to the COVID-19 scare, the market did not function for the past three weeks. Considering the need of the people, the district administration had given permission for the weekly market to function at the Annur Bus stand. However, it was insisted that the sellers and the buyers had to maintain social distancing.
Despite the warnings, people gathered at the market to buy their essentials without maintaining social distance.
Annur Tahsildar Chandra, who came down for inspection, was shocked to see the people crowding in the market with complete disregard for the social distancing norms. Following this, she ordered the police to close down the market.
As a result of this, all the market activities were ended and the shops were closed. The people who had come down to buy vegetables and groceries had to leave empty handed.
"Despite many warnings to maintain social distancing, the people had failed to follow it, causing the closure of the market", said the Tahsildar.
