Coimbatore: Singanallur MLA N Karthik has come down heavily on the district administration in Coimbatore in a letter sent to the Collector yesterday. In the letter, MLA N. Karthik has brought to light quite a few issues that has been allegedly brought to his notice by people with regard to government's distribution of relief supplies, through ration shops.

He stated in the letter, "The livelihood of many groups of people, like daily wage labourers, agricultural laboureres, auto drivers, taxi drivers, construction workers, other unorganised sector employees, road side vendors and old people, have become a question mark, due to the lockdown caused due to COVID-19. The DMK President M.K. Stalin had insisted that these people should be provided with the essential commodities and cash, by the ration shops, through door to door distribution.
In relation to this, the TN government has ordered for the distribution of Rs.1,000 and essential commodities like rice, lentils, sugar, wheat and cooking oil, at the ration shops.”
He alleged that, “The distribution of these items are not being undertaken, door to door, as suggested by the DMK President Stalin. Instead the relief materials are supplied at the ration shop. As a result of this, people are crowding around the ration shops in large numbers defeating the purpose of social distancing. Inspite of their own order to distance socially, the government has been increasing the gathering of people, that can cause a spike in the spread of the disease.
Likewise, the commodities provided at the ration shops now are not properly measured and there have been a lot of irregularities. Each shop provides the goods in different quantities and not the amount specified by the government. For example, as per the government's order, each ration card can receive a total of 20kgs of boiled rice, raw rice and wheat. However at many ration shops, the quantity supplied is only 15 or 16kgs. However the SMS notification specifies that they have received 20 kg of goods. Similar irregularities are occurring in the the quantity of sugar given as only 1,800 grams are given and not the 2kg offered by the government.
The rice that is distributed is also not of good quality, with a lot of stones, dust, weevils, discolored rice with a bad stench and in an inedible state. Many people have complained regarding this.
People have been badly affected due to the pandemic. In addition to this, the lower quality food supplies in reduced quantities, are being received with a heavy heart, by the women in our city."
He therefore requested that "The District Collector must ensure that the essential commodities like rice, sugar, lentils and wheat, provided at the ration shops, are of good quality and the right quantity. This must be ensured immediately to help the grieving people."
