Vegetables on wheels might help with social distancing - MP P.R. Natarajan

Coimbatore: Coimbatore MP PR Natarajan, has written to the District Collector, suggesting the implementation of the sale of essentials using Corporation vehicles, door to door.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore MP PR Natarajan, has written to the District Collector, suggesting the implementation of the sale of essentials using Corporation vehicles, door to door.

In the letter, he stated, "The District Administration has been undertaking a lot of steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which is appreciable. The public have been following social distancing, as advised.

However the need to buy essentials, especially vegetables, brings the people, out of their houses. As a result of this, the movement of people is visible in large numbers in Gandhipuram, Ukkadam, Townhall and other market places.

To prevent this, the Thoothukudi Corporation Administration has started delivering assorted vegetables to the people, at their homes, at a lower price. This has won the appreciation of the public. If this method is implemented in Coimbatore, it will help the people greatly, and prevent them from stepping out of their houses.

In consultation with the Corporation Commissioner, the vehicles under the disposal of the District Administration can be used for this purpose. The administration can approach the vegetable vendors at the market and fix a price for a collection of vegetables, that could last for five days. This can then be distributed to the people, at their doorstep.

The dates for the 100 wards under the Coimbatore Corporation can be decided and the volunteers can be used to assist with the implementation. By doing this, the administration can ensure social distancing and control the movement of the people."

He further hoped that the district administration would consider this suggestion and plan for its implementation.
