Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Police have arrested 237 people and booked 187 cases on those who violated Section 144 by roaming in the streets.
Not paying heed to the nationwide lockdown to combat Coronavirus, over 237 violators were arrested in Coimbatore City for defying the orders even as people largely stayed indoors.
While the district administration has been repeatedly requesting people to stay indoors and venture out only for buying essentials and emergency needs, there are people especially youth who venture out for no obvious reasons, the police say.
So far, the police have arrested 237 people and seized 64 two wheelers and two cars. The Police also had to use mild force against those who violated the restrictions. Few violators were allowed to go home after they apologised for roaming on streets, an official said.
In Coimbatore District alone, 74 cases have been filed and 79 people have been arrested for defying lockdown. In the sub- urban regions of Coimbatore 113 cases have been filed and 152 people have been arrested. 47 two wheeler and 4 cars have been confiscated.
