Police crackdown on citizens is violation of Human rights - Coimbatore Human Rights Forum

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Human Rights Forum (CHRF) has complained to the National Human Rights Commission regarding the crackdown on citizens, who stepped out during the implementation of Section 144, by the police in Coimbatore.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Human Rights Forum (CHRF) has complained to the National Human Rights Commission regarding the crackdown on citizens, who stepped out during the implementation of Section 144, by the police in Coimbatore.

They have requested the Commission to intervene and put a stop to the attacks  unleashed on citizens, who step out for essentials and emergencies.

Citing that a citizen Rajendran from R.S. Puram in Coimbatore was denied to access food by the police, the forum also acknowledged that the public must refrain from stepping out for silly reasons.

"While requesting the public to prevent unnecessary movement, it is also important for the police, to not be blinded by the single focus of implementing Section 144", they said.

"Human rights violations cannot happen as a result of the implementation of Section 144", they argued.

This act is a violation of the guarantee provided under Sec. 21 that, "No person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to a procedure established by law.”

Under Sec188 (i) it is only illegal for more than four people to gather during the implementation of Sec. 144. They will be arrested by the Police and be charged for disobedience. They will further be imprisoned for a short period of time and will be released on bail. On investigation, if the crime is proven, they will be imprisoned for a period of one month.
