Coimbatore: The Vegetable Auction Center functioning at Mettupalayam, Coimbatore, where vegetables like carrot, beans, beetroot, cabbage are brought from various places including Nilgiris, Asanur, Thalawadi and sent to other districts of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states such as Kerala is going to be temporarily closed down. Over 50 tonnes of vegetable is being transported to neighbouring districts daily from here.

Exports have gradually declined as retailers have been reluctant to buy vegetables for the past week due to the threat of coronavirus threat across the country. In this case, it is now completely depleted and many tons of vegetable were left unsold.

Therefore the Mettupalayam Vegetable Auction Center has been closed for one week from today till 31st due to the inability to store rotten goods. There is a risk of vegetable shortage due to this action and it highlights the request they have been raising to multiple state governments to build cold storage centers in the area.
