Criminal action to be initiated on those who sell hand sanitizers and masks at hiked prices

Coimbatore: Based on the information that masks and hand sanitizers were being sold at higher prices, due to the preventive measures for COVID-19, DGP of Civil Supplies, CID Dr Pradeep V Philip has ordered to hold audits, at regular intervals.

Coimbatore: Based on the information that masks and hand sanitizers were being sold at higher prices, due to the preventive measures for COVID-19, DGP of Civil Supplies, CID Dr Pradeep V Philip has ordered to hold audits, at regular intervals. 

After preventive measures for COVID-19 was announced, the prices of sanitisers and face masks shot up abnormally, throughout the nation. The government has passed a directive to businesses against taking advantage of the situation and making huge profit, by hiking prices of maks and sanitisers. 



In this scenario, on behalf of the orders of the Chennai Regional Superintendent of Police, Shanti and under the direct supervision of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore, Ravikumar, the Civil Supplies CID Police Inspector Muthumaalai, Police Sub Inspector and personnel, conducted audits at medical shops, pharmaceutical distributors and pharmaceutical companies, today (Mar 23) in the city.

The officials informed that a three layered mask, should be charged at Rs. 10, and Rs 8 for a two layered mask. Similarly, a 200 ml hand sanitizer should be sold for Rs.100. If any of the medical shops, pharmaceutical distributors or pharmaceutical companies sell these products at hiked prices, action can be taken on such entities under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs Food and Public Distribution of the Central Government Order No. S.0.1197 (E).

All of the above mentioned medical products have been brought under the Essential Commodities Act 1955. Therefore, criminal action will be taken on anybody selling these products, in violation of the terms.
