Coimbatore: DMK MLA N. Karthik in the assembly today said, with the view of Coimbatore developing rapidly as an industrial city, in 2010, DMK had announced the airport expansion and alleged that it was still pending from being implemented by the AIADMK government.

CM Edappadi Palanisamy in reply said, the airport expansion was announced with no background works being done and no lands ready for the expansion.

He further added that Minister SP Velumani had held talks with the landowners who have been reluctant in handing over lands with the current real estate trend that is at the peak in Coimbatore. Also, the then Finance Minister had directly met with the landowners to close the land required for the project soon.

The CM said that the Minister had been coordinating to implement the project at the earliest. He added that currently an alternate land for relocation has been arranged.

CM pointed out that DMK has made several hasty proposals without doing any groundwork which led to complication in implementing them, among them is the Coimbatore airport expansion.

He added that it was imperative to possess at least 85% of the land required for the project before initiating construction.
