Tirupur: The 'daily market', in front of the Tirupur Old Bus Stand, houses more than 400 shops, that are functional. Under the Smart City scheme of the Tirupur Corporation, the old market was marked to be demolished and new shops were to be constructed in the same place. However, the traders had expressed their opposition for this project.

The district authorities arrived at the spot with Poclain machines for demolishing the old market buildings. The traders, however, refused to let the authorities enter the market. They staged an impromptu protest on the spot.
Following this, Police officials negotiated with the traders and the demolition plan was put off for later. The confrontation between the traders and the authorities created a tense situation in the area for sometime .
