Last week, Anandh (33) a Hindu Munnani functionary and Iqbal of SDPI party were attacked by unidentified assaulters. The incidents created a huge uproar among both the party cadres who staged agitations comdemning arrest of those involved in the attack.
Even a shop closure protest was organised by both the parties on March 7, leaving the public fear of communal clashes in the city.
In a bid to restore peace in the city and ensure that such undesirable incidents does not escalate into large scale communal clashes, Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan and Deputy Commissioner Balaji Saravanan ordered to tighten security across the city and ordered to nab the accused. Both the parties were also warmed to refrain from engaging in violence and cooperate with the police to nab the accused.
Two days ago, Noor Mohammed was arrested in connection with the attack on Hindu Munnani functionary. Another person named, Azharuddin has been arrested today, with regard to the same case.
Similarly, two arrests have been made regarding the attack on SDPI District Secretary, Iqbal. While it was reported that seven men are involved in the attack, two of the Hindu Munnani cadres Satish Kannan (23) and Rahul (23) have been arrested.
While investigations are on, the Police Commissioner has issued stern warning to religious outfits to refrain from communal attacks in Coimbatore.
