MP P.R. Natarajan insisted on the provision of pension, a social security benefit, for the Paramilitary forces and their family members, at the Lok Sabha today.
Elaborating his reason for the demand, he said, "The paramilitary forces work day and night in the cold Himalayan slopes, for the safety and security of the country, with a willingness to offer their life for the country. However, the government does not offer any social protection and ignores the family of the members of the Paramilitary forces."
Speaking about this under the rule 377, he said, "The Paramilitary force and their family members are not offered social security benefits like the members of the Army, Navy and Airforce. The Paramilitary is a crucial and responsible security force. They protect the country while they are stationed at the snowy Himalayan mountains, with a willingness to offer their lives for the country. They are not even granted leaves to visit ailing family members, who live many thousands of kilometers away from them."
Further, he also stated the plight of the Paramilitary force members, while seeking employment and said, "The Paramilitary force members are not given preference, during the Civil Service recruitment and not given a job under reservation for former servicemen, as well. They are pushed to a position to compete with highly qualified younger generation individuals."
The MP also said, "Considering their sacrifice and loyalty, it seems that the government is partial. The pension paid to them under the new pension scheme is not sufficient. The exceptional service of the Paramilitary members is not taken into consideration, for offering any kind of social security benefit to the family of these members."
Finally, he pressed for the case and addressed the Minister for Defence and said, "Under humanitarian consideration, the government must take their bravery and sacrifice into consideration and analyse their pension. Just like the three services under the Defence Ministry, the Paramilitary force members and their family must also be considered for social security benefit under the old pension scheme."
