Tirupur: A 30-year-old man tried to set himself on fire in front of the Tirupur District Collectorate on Wednesday after his wife allegedly deserted him due to her parent's influence.

The alert police on duty at the Collectorate thwarted his suicide attempt and saved him.

According to reports, Premkumar (30) was leading a happy married life with his newly wedded wife, Sujatha. The couple who belong to different caste got married against their parents wish in August 2019. Their inter-caste marriage was presided by TPDK leader Ramakrishnan.
He alleges that his in-laws brainwashed his wife and took her along with them. Further, he alleges to have been threatened by them to mutually agree to part ways.
Depressed by their threats, Premkumar decided to petition to the Tirupur District Collector to help him reunite with his wife.
Unexpectedly, he tried to self immolate which led to a stir at the Collectorate premises.
