Coimbatore: Marking the International Women's Day, BJP State General Secretary and Founder of Makkal Sevai Mayyam, Vanathi Srinivasan, opened accounts for 150 girl children, with the 'Selvamagal Savings Account' (Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana) at the Ram Nagar Aiyyapan Pooja Sangam today.
Coimbatore: Marking the International Women's Day, BJP State General Secretary and Founder of Makkal Sevai Mayyam, Vanathi Srinivasan, opened accounts for 150 girl children, with the 'Selvamagal Savings Account' (Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana) at the Ram Nagar Aiyyapan Pooja Sangam today.
The Selvamagal Savings Account' (Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana) Scheme was launched in 2015, for the welfare of girl children, by the Central Government. The parents of the guardians of a girl child less than ten years, can open a savings account for this scheme at the nearest Post Office branch or at specific bank branches. The documentation required for opening this savings account are the birth certificate of the child, address proof and identity proof of the parents.
A minimum of Rs.250 must be deposited, to open the account and accounts can be opened for a maximum of two girl children.
The scheme also encourages regular monthly deposits for 15 years and the maturity amount can be withdrawn when the child turns 21 years old. When the child turns 18, 50% of the amount can be withdrawn for the use of higher education. The scheme provides 8.1% p.a. interest on deposits.
After the event of opening accounts was completed, Vanathi Srinivasan said, "TN holds the highest number of savings account under the Selvamagal Savings Scheme. Mulliyampalayam village in Thondamuthur has been adopted and 100 girl children have been entered into this scheme."
Coimbatore Postal Department Primary Superintendent Sudhir Gopal Jakhere said, "People have shown a lot of interest for this scheme. Last year, in Coimbatore District more than 5000 accounts were opened. This year it has surpassed last year, and more than 6,500 accounts have been opened already. Efforts are being made to add 10,000 people by the end of the year. The larger target is to add 100 percent of girl children into this scheme."
Vidya Vikashini School Founder Visalakshi Rajagopalan and BJP cadres and others took part in the event.
