With the announcement of shop closure protest by both Islamic outfits and the Hindu Munnani, majority of the shops in Ukkadam Fish Market, Karumbukadai, Athupalam, Town Hall, Kuniyamuthur, Singanallur, Gandhipuram, Rathinapuri and Puliyakulam have been shut down.
Thousands of people have been affected due to the protest, especially those who rely on food from hotels.
In a bid to offset the inconvenience, the Islamic organisations distributed food parcels in various areas including Railway Station, Gandhipuram Bus Terminal and Ukkadam Bus Stand.
In the first phase, food packets were distributed to nearly 500 people at the Government Hospital in Coimbatore.
