Namakkal: The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy on Friday laid the foundation stone for the new Government Medical College in Namakkal, and inaugurated several developemental projects. Later, he distributed Government welfare assistance to the beneficiaries.

Speaking on the occasion, CM Edappadi Palanisamy said, "The opposition party is spreading false rumours saying that other state students occupy most seats in medical colleges. But we strictly follow only 15% seats in All India quota and the rest 85% seats are occupied by Tamil Nadu students. It is to be noted that TN students are also included in the 15% quota."
Under the centre's scheme, Tamil Nadu has been granted permission to start nine medical colleges. In August 2019 , the cabinet committee on economic affairs approved setting up of 75 government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu by 2021-22.
The project will be partially funded by the centre. Presently, Tamil Nadu has 24 medical colleges, and a proposal for setting up six colleges in Tirupur, the Nilgiris, Ramanathapuram, Namakkal, Dindigul and Virudhunagar are being executed.
