Coimbatore: The members of 'Tamizhaga Makkal Otrumai Medai' have filed a petition to the City Police Commissioner on Thursday against the shop closure protest called for by the Hindu Munnani.
Coimbatore: The members of 'Tamizhaga Makkal Otrumai Medai' have filed a petition to the City Police Commissioner on Thursday against the shop closure protest called for by the Hindu Munnani.
Condemning the attack on Anandh (33), District Incharge of Hindu Munnani on Wednesday night near Nanjundapuram, by unidentifed men, the organisation had called for a shop closure protest on March 7, Saturday.
Citing the riots that happened during the funeral procession of Sasikumar, a Hindu Munnani functionary who was murdered in 2018, the members of Tamizhaga Makkal Otrumai Medai have raised concern that the police should ban the protest called for by Hindu Munnani, as it could lead to disruption of communal harmony and normalcy of the city.
"The shop closure protest called for by Hindu Munnani will affect the normal life of the people. As there are chances of unforeseen events, the Police should not grant permission for such protests", they petitioned the City Police Commissioner.
They also demanded the Police to provide security for the people and property during the protest.
The co-ordinator of the organisation Padmanabhan, said, "In several occasions, the Supreme Court and the High Court have banned shop closure protests. The courts have directed that the Police and the district administration should not permit shop closures as it would affect the normal life of the people."
