Coimbatore: Following, World Bank's announcement of additional funding for enhancing dam safety in India, the team of experts from Central Water Commission (CWC) have been visiting dams across Tamil Nadu to commence restoration work. In one such visit, the team visited Sholaiyar dam in Valparai, on Wednesday.

In one such visit, the team visited Sholaiyar dam in Valparai, on Wednesday.
A team led by Padmanabhan, Chairman of Central Water Commission comprising of CWC members and Srinivasan, Director of Central Geologcial Survey group and the State Project Management Director Kalimuthu, visited the Sholaiyar dam. Officials from PWD and TANGEDCO were also present.
The team analysed the catchment area of Sholaiyar dam, Chinnakallar and Keezh Neerar Dam.
Speaking to the press regarding the visit, the Chairman of CWC Padmanabhan said, "The stability of the dam and proposed maintenance works at the dam will be discussed and a comprehensive report will be submitted to the government. The maintenance works will be carried out in phase two, with the funds from the World Bank."
The Sholaiyar dam is the primary dam for the Parambikulam Aliyar project that supplies water to Pollachi, Tirupur, Dharapuram and Palladam areas. Water for more than one lakh acres of farms and drinking water is supplied through this. Water stored at this dam is used for the generation of electricity at two power stations before reaching Parambikulam. Following this the water reaches the Kerala TN dams of Aliyar and Thirumoorthy dam.
