The Nilgiris: As part of the multi-disciplinary committee, Gulshan Raj, Chief Engineer, DSO from Central Water Commission visited the Nilgiris today to assess and plan action plan for the Porthi, Avalanche, Emerald, Kunda and Begumbahalla dams. Officials from TANGEDCO were present.

"With financial assiatance from the World Bank, 223 dams in seven states including Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka are being restored at a cost of Rs.3486 crore. The successful execution of this scheme has led to a second phase were 736 dams will be restored ar a cost of a billion dollars", informed Gulshan Raj, Chief Engineer, DSO from Central Water Commission (CWC).
The Chief Engineer from CWC apprised that next to China and USA, India has 5,700 dams and 411 new dams under construction.
"Due to incessant rains last year, there were landslides in 77 different places in the Nilgiris. With the swift action by the District Administration, PWD, TANGEDCO and other departments we were able to minimise the losses", informed J Innocent Divya, Nilgiris District Collector.
Director of TANGEDCO Ethiraj, World Bank Advisor Dr. Ajith Kumar Patnaik and other senior officials from District Administration department took part in the meet.
