There are about 2.5 lakh power looms in Coimbatore and Tirupur district. 95% of its workers are daily-wagers. But for the past six years, the wages of power loom workers has not been increased.
Today a group of Power Loom Owners' Associations and weaving in Coimbatore and Tirupur met with the District Collector of Coimbatore, K. Rajamani and submitted a petition regarding higher wages for powerloom workers.
Speaking to reporters, the President of the association Palanisamy said that the wage hike problem had not been solved for the past six years and that no action had been taken so far by the workers' welfare officials and requested the District Collector to resolve the wage hike issue.
He added that the District Collector had promised to resolve the wage hike issue within a week and he also said that if the solution was not resolved, the power loom operators in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts would go on a strike to enforce the demands.
