Coimbatore:
The National Commission,
for Women
 on collaboration with
State
Commission for women and District Welfare department jointly held an awareness campaign to "celebrate the right to free movement for women" by organising a night walk in the city on March 1.

Ahead of the Women's day which will be observed on March 8
these walks under the banner 'Pride Walk' are organised across the nation to dispel the stereotyping around mobility of women during night hours. The rally also stressed that the society should provide a safe and secure environment for the women.

"This pride walk is held to convey the message that women should be able to step out even alone at night. Women should be able to step out at any hour, even at night. Why does the society questions a women when she wants to step out in the night? Even if she is allowed, she has to give so much explanation and justification", questioned a woman who took part in the pride walk.

Many women who took part in the pride walk opined that restricting mobility of women and asking women to reach their homes by evening and not work late hours, drastically affects their career.

Over 200 women from all walks of life took part in the pride walk.
