Mohanraj, a first-year student from Salem has been pursuing Sericulture at the Forest College and Research Institute in Mettupalayam of Coimbatore district.
On Saturday, eight of his college mates went to bathe in the Bhavani river at Mettupalayam. It is reported that when everyone were bathing in the river at Oomapalayam, Mohanraj moved towards the deeper side of the river and drowned.
Subsequently, upon information fire personnel from MTP rushed to the spot and commenced the rescue operations.
After several hours of search, the corpse was recovered and sent for autopsy.
Reports say, the parents of Mohan Raj are dubious of his death as he is a good swimmer. His parents claim that he could have drowned at this level of water.
Police have registered a case regarding the death of the student and are conducting inquiries.
The untimely demise of the college student has sent shock waves in the college.
