Coimbatore: As announced a fasting protest was held in the city urging to implement Tamil as the official language across all government departments and temples. The protest was led by Perur Aadheenam Santhalinga Marudhachala Adigalar at Tatabad here on Saturday.

The protesting members urged the State government to pass laws announcing primary education in mother tongue. Similarly, it was demanded that laws must be made to mandate the use of Tamil, for higher secondary education and college education. Tamil must also be made the ruling language and must be enforced in all the departments, they demanded.
All the temples under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and other temples must use Tamil as the language for consecration ceremonies and other rituals, the protestors demanded.
They also stressed that parents in TN should name their kids with Tamil names. And, all business and other commercial enterprises must use Tamil as the primary language for name boards.
"Like announced by the Maharashtra Government, 80% of government jobs should be given to people who have been educated in their mother tongue. A language commission must be formed for Tamil, just like the Karnataka Government's Commission for Kannada", the protestors demanded.
They proposed that the language Commission's flag should consist of the symbols of fish, tiger and bow, representing the Cheras, Cholas and Pandiyas.
Speaking to the press regarding this, Perur Adheenam Santhalinga Marudhachala Adigalar said, " The influence of foreign languages has increased exponentially and the use of English has become the norm in schools. Henceforth, prayers in temples should be in Tamil. Parents should name their kids in Tamil and priority and reservation should be given to the students who studied in Tamil as their medium of instruction."
He further passed the responsibility to the public and said the public are the reason why Tamil is not been featured primarily in temples. People should insist in conducting prayers in Tamil.
Movie Director Gauthaman, Poets - Sirppi and Appavu, Roots Director, Kavidasan and many others took part in the protest.
