Coimbatore: The Police are left in shock as Sandalwood smugglers have struck again in Coimbatore. And, this time, the smugglers have axed and smuggled a sandalwood tree from a farmland in Singanallur here.
The sandalwood tree belongs to Babu, of Attapakavundanpudur, Kuttai Thottam area in Singanallur. Following the incident, Babu has filed a complaint with the Singanallur Police and the District Collector.
In his complaint, Babu has noted that smugglers have axed his 20 foot tall, 25-year-old sandalwood tree from his farmland in Singanallur. He has requested the District Collector to order the officials to trace the criminals and handover the axed tree to him.
Following unabated incidents of Sandalwood smuggling in Kattor, Saibaba Colony, RS Puram, Kuniyamuthur, Kovaipudur, Singanallur and Race Course, the City Police Commissioner, Sumit Sharan ordered to form a special team to nab the criminals.
Even a shocking video footage of the sandalwood smugglers meandering along the streets of Singanallur area with deadly weapons during night hours, shook the people who insisted the police to intensify night patrolling.
On Dec 17, 2019, acting upon a tip off the police arrested Govindaraj, Vishnu and Anbu in Saibaba Colony for their involvement in various sandalwood smuggling cases, in the city. Tools and other tree felling equipments were confiscated from the accused. The police are also on the lookout for the other criminals who escaped.
Now, another incident of sandalwood smuggling in Singanallur area has perturbed the residents.
