Coimbatore: Following the recent Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) order on mandatory expiry date for unpackaged sweets from June 1, 2020, the District Designated FSSAI Officer K Kalaiselvan has informed that meetings will be convened with all sweet shop owners and wholesale manufacturers to educate them on the process.
Coimbatore: Following the recent Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) order on mandatory expiry date for unpackaged sweets from June 1, 2020, the District Designated FSSAI Officer K Kalaiselvan has informed that meetings will be convened with all sweet shop owners and wholesale manufacturers to educate them on the process.
The FSSAI has directed all Food safety Commissioners across all the States to ensure compliance of its latest direction on food safety.
Speaking to Simplicity on the newly issued order and the process of implementation in Coimbatore, Dr.K. Kalaiselvan, Designated District FSSAI Officer informed that "FSSAI has been taking several steps to ensure hygiene and sanitation in food products. To ensure food safety standards, it is important that consumers should be informed of the manufacturing and expiry date. The order by the FSSAI urging to mention the date of manufacturing and expiry of every sweet sold at the shops, is very crucial. Many time, consumers are unaware of the shelf life of the sweets sold."
''In public interest and to ensure food safety, it has been decided that in case of non-packaged/loose sweets, the container/tray holding sweets at the outlet for sale should display the 'date of manufacturing ' and 'best before date' of the product, with effect from June 1, 2020", he added.
He further noted that as milk sweets are easily perishable, it is important that the consumers are informed of the manufacturing date and shelf life of the sweet.
"Along, with the manufacturing and expiry date, the ingredients used in preparation of the sweet should also be mentioned next to the sweet tray", the FSSAI Officer said.
"Depending upon the nature of the sweets and its shelf life, FSSAI has classified the sweets as perishable sweets and highly personable sweets -- medium shelf life, long shelf life and very long shelf life sweets. Based on the category, tags will be issued to all sweets shops and shop keepers who should display the same next to the sweet trays, accordingly", Dr. K. Kalaiselvan informed.
The FSSAI Officer stated that they would recommend sweet manufacturers to maintain complete records of their sweet making process and their FSSAI license should be displayed visibly in their shops.
"Soon, we will convene a meeting with sweet manufacturers to instruct them on the order. Even training will be given to sweet manufactures on handling sweets with utmost hygiene and sanitation", Dr. Kalaiselvan explained.
