Coimbatore: The Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Dr. N. Kumar was conferred with "Life time Achievement Award” by ICAR — National Research Centre for Banana, Tiruchirappalli, on Feb 22, 2020.

The award was conferred to him in recognisation of his specific contribution to banana cultivation through systematic banana breeding program.

Banana Breeding Program

Started in 1998 at TNAU, the banana breeding program has led to the development of synthetic hybrids viz., H.212, NPH -02-01, H. 531 which are resistant to biotic stresses. Out of which H-212 was released as CO2 for commercial cultivation during January, 2020.

This is the first synthetic cultivar released in India, with tolerance to nematodes and lesser incidence of Fusarium wilt with a yield potential of 32 t/ha.

Dr. Kumar's work on standardization of fertigation technology in banana is widely followed under precision farming by many farmers to maximize the yield. The bio- priming technology developed in hill banana, helps to have disease free plantations.

Adding to his achievements, the VC has exclusively guided seven Ph.D and 5 M.Sc students specialising in banana research. Out of which two Ph.D students won the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Award.

He has operated many external funded schemes including seven schemes exclusively devoted for banana research, the results of which were presented at six international conferences, abroad.
