The AIADMK cadres across the State are celebrating the 72nd birth anniversary of the former CM Jayalalithaa, today.
On February 20, the CM announced several welfare measures to improve the well being and safety of women and girl children. One such initiative was kick started today at the District Collectorate, with the launch of complaint boxes to report sexual harrassments and abuse against Women.
After inaugurating the initiative, District Collector K. Rajamani said, “The birth anniversary of late CM Jayalalithaa will henceforth be observed as 'State Girl Child Protection Day’, every year. Officials at the District Administration took an oath to protect the safety of women and girl children.This day will also observed to ensure to grant equal rights and privileges to women and annihilate abuse of any form."
The Collector informed that the District Administration, Social Welfare Department and the Police department are working together to put an end to sexual abuse against girl children. "Around 20 to 25 cases of child abuse are reported, per year. All complaints are being addressed promptly through the Child Protection Department”, the Collector informed.
“Similarly, several efforts are taken to bring down sexual abuse against women. Various organisations are working collectively to achieve the goal. Awareness campaigns are being promoted in schools and colleges to educate the masses. The Vishaka Committee is also actively functioning under the District Collector and sexual harassment faced by working women is brought to notice”, he said.
“Today, complaint boxes are placed at the Collectorate to encourage women to report such issues without fear and hesitation. However, caution must be exercised while giving a complaint, as the complainants are advised to refrain from false accusations for personal gains. The administration will scrutinise the complaints thoroughly before acting upon the complaint", he assured.
The Collector also informed that cases of child marriage in the district has drastically reduced. With more awareness and education, we will be able to achieve the desired results, he said.
