Coimbatore: The special police team formed upon the orders of IG (West Zone) K Periaiah have busted a gang who were involved in snatching mobile phones from motorists and public in Sulur. The special team were directly supervised by DIG G Karthikeyan and SP Sujith Kumar and Deputy SP, K Balamurugan, said the police on Saturday.

The IG has expressed his appreciation to the special team for swiftly acting upon and busting the gang.
The action comes after the gang stabbed Dhanushkodi, a 44-year-old man and snatched his cell phone on Arasur road, near Sulur. The man along with his son were travelling near Arasur, when a gang in two-wheelers stabbed Dhanushkodi and snatched his cell phone. Unfortunately, he passed away on his way to the hospital.
On the same day, the gang snatched a cell phone from a man named Sundara Mahalingam on Thennampalayam to Annur road near Vasantham Nagar.
A complaint was filed in Sulur police station regarding the two incidents. As repeated cell phone snatching incidents are being reported in the stretch, IG K Periaiah ordered to form special teams to nab the culprits.
Accordingly, special teams comprising of Karumathampatti Deputy SP K. Balamurugan, Sulur police station Inspector R. Thangaraju, Sub-Inspectors Pandiyaraj, Rathinakumar, Annur police station Aravind Rajan, Karumathampatti police station Aruldas, Chettipalayam police station Inspector Maharajan, Sulur police Inspector Mahendran reviewed the CCTV footages and nabbed the six member gang at near Malliga mill, Appanaickenpatti Pirivu road in Papappampatti-Palladam road on Friday.
They confiscated two cellphones, two-wheelers and the knife used for the attack.
The accused have been identified as Ganesh Vetrivel (20), Mohankumar (23), Surya (19), Vijayakumar (321), Sathi Kumar (21) and Muthukaruppu (19).
