Coimbatore: The driver of the truck who allegedly caused the accident which killed 19 people near Avinashi on Thursday was produced in the Tirupur District Court, today and remanded. He was sent to Coimbatore central prison.
Coimbatore: The driver of the truck who allegedly caused the accident which killed 19 people near Avinashi on Thursday was produced in the Tirupur District Court, today and remanded. He was sent to Coimbatore central prison.
Reports say that K A Hemaraj (37), the driver who hails from Kollathumkundil near Palakkad dozed off and lost control of the vehicle which was carrying 25 tonnes of tiles. The truck which was enroute to Bengaluru from Kochi apparently hit the median and crossed over to the opposite side of the lane.
Following the impact, the container got detached from the truck and ripped the right side of the KSRTC's volvo bus which was enroute to Ernakulam from Bengaluru. Most of the passengers who were dead were seated on the right side of the bus which was completely disfigured.
The incident happened at around 3:30 AM on the Salem highways near Avinashi in Tirupur district. The swift action by the police, district administration and the locals helped to rescue the injured who rushed them through ambulances to Tirupur and Coimbatore government hospitals respectively.
While the driver was reported to have absconded from the scene, the police caught him yesterday and booked him under three sections 279, 337, 304 (A).
Today, he was produced in the District Criminal Court No:3. The magistrate ordered judicial custody for 15 days. Following which he was sent to Coimbatore central prison.
