Coimbatore: After nearly two years, a proposal by Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation for developing five corporation schools into model schools has been shelved citing various reasons.
With an aim to enhance the facilities in government schools and make them at par with private schools, the project was proposed in 2018 and implemented under the area-based development of the Coimbatore Smart City Project.
According to CCMC's financial budget 2018-19, the civic body proposed to develop 22 schools in 14 wards. In the first phase, nearly five schools were selected to be transformed into smart schools at an estimated cost of Rs.27.51 crore. Corporation Primary School in Sir CV Raman Road, PVP Primary School in East Arokiasamy Road, Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School in West Sambandam Road, Corporation Co-Education Higher Secondary School in West Arokiasamy Road and Corporation Deaf and Dumb School in Subramaniam Road are the five schools proposed, earlier.
Some of ear-marked features include smart classrooms, smart boards, teaching through computers and internet accessibility.
According to a senior Corporation official, "The proposal was made during the financial budget 2018-19. The plans included to grant administrative and technical sanctions and later invite bids to commence the project."
Official sources said, "As the project could not be implemented under Smart City projects, the project has been put on hold."
