Tirupur: Even after one year of announcement on ban of single-use plastic products by the Tamil Nadu State government, the Corporations and Municipalities across the State are still struggling to curb the usage of banned plastics in their respective regions.

Though in the twelve months, the usage of plastics has drastically come down, the high cost of alternatives for plastics is seen as a major hindrance for small players to adopt eco-friendly options. Despite forcibly shutting down many units which were manufacturing banned plastic covers, the availability of covers less than 50 microns are still doing rounds among the traders. Surprise raids and inspections has helped the officials to reduce the menace.
In one such raid in Tirupur's Kongu Nagar on Wednesday, the officials led by Health Officer Ramachandran inspected a shop and seized several single-use banned plastic items like tea cups, covers and plates.
According to the officials, around 1.5 tonnes of banned plastic items were seized from the shop. The shop owner Gunasekaran was levied a fine of RS. 20,000.
